But just a short distance outside the clamor of the city is a whole different world. In the surrounding small towns and villages you'll get a glimpse into Japan's rich culture and traditions.    On clear days, particularly in winter, Mount Fuji (Fuji-san in Japanese) is visible from as far as Tokyo, 60 miles away. When Japan’s highest mountain is capped with snow, it’s a picture-postcard perfect volcanic cone. One of the best-known symbols of Japan, this iconic mountain has been considered sacred since ancient times and was even forbidden to women until the early 1900s.

   The capital of Aichi Prefecture and the fourth-largest city in Japan, Nagoya is the historical heartland of ancient samurai as well as Japan's modern industry. Explore the elegant samurai fortress Nagoya Castle, with cherry blossoms surrounding the castle's understated turrets. During your Nagoya cruise, visit Osu Kannon Buddhist temple and see the statue of the goddess of mercy within. Then stroll through the bustling Osu Market nearby, with its stalls selling everything from antiques to anime pop art. Or head to Tokugawa Garden and stroll among the black pines, cherry trees and peonies surrounding a calm lake, then pop into the nearby Tokugawa Art Museum and see Edo-period artefacts.

   Life is a little slower in the Okinawa prefecture, where the beaches are impossibly blue and the island offers something for everyone, from outdoor enthusiasts to foodies and everything in between. Scuba divers especially love the Okinawa area and Southwest Islands for its vibrant coral ecosystem and incredible limestone formations.
   
   No Asia cruise would be complete without a stop in Okinawa, which has a long history of U.S. armed forces living on the island. Your Okinawa, Japan cruise ship will dock in Naha, the capital city of the Okinawa prefecture. In Naha, you’ll find a fascinating mix of Shinto shrines and landmarks dating back to the 14th century, like Shurijo Castle and the traditional Shikinaen Garden.
